Overcoming the Limits of Reoperation with Costal Cartilage
What is costal cartilage rhinoplasty?
Solid support, structural reconstruction, and the ultimate standard for rhinoplasty
DU Plastic Surgery Rib Cartilage RevisionIt is a highly difficult surgery that goes beyond simply correcting the shape and includes restoration of the collapsed structure and reconstruction of cartilage.
DU uses its own know-how to firmly establish the base of the nose using autologous or donated ribs and minimize side effects such as warping (bending) to complete a revision surgery that simultaneously achieves function, aesthetics, and stability.
- Completely rebuilt, including the internal structure
- Enhanced support with DU SafeCore™
- A hospital specializing in costal cartilage, with experience handling numerous high-difficulty cases.
Surgery Information
Surgery time
2-3 hours + autologous rib harvesting (1 hour)
Anesthesia method
general anesthesia
Outpatient treatment
2~3 times
Thread removal
7, 14 days later
Recovery Period
7 days
※ There may be differences in results depending on individual differences and side effects (inflammation, bleeding, infection, etc.) after surgery or treatment.

Autologous costal cartilage vs. incisional donated costal cartilage
![]() autologous costal cartilage |
VS | ![]() donated costal cartilage |
| Taken from the patient's own chest (usually 6th to 9th costal cartilage) | Collect | Sterilization and radiation sterilization of other people's tissues |
| Very strong (excellent holding power) | Supporting power | strong |
| It is possible to occur, but can be controlled with excision and plastic surgery techniques. | Warping phenomenon | Mostly processed, so warping is relatively low. |
| High degree of freedom (design flexibility) | Shape control | Since it is already processed, shape control may be limited. |
| Costal cartilage harvesting takes more time. Scarring and pain are possible. (Incision is approximately 2-3 cm) | Surgery time and recovery | Shorter surgery time by eliminating the extraction process. No scarring, less pain. |
| Reoperation, cartilage deficiency, high-difficulty rhinoplasty | Recommended for | If you have a small amount of cartilage and want to avoid scarring during the first surgery |
When costal cartilage rhinoplasty is necessary
Target
- When there is a deficiency of ear cartilage or septal cartilage
- If the tip of the nose is collapsed or droopy
- If your nose shape is asymmetrical or unsatisfactory
- If the internal cartilage is damaged or adhered
- If warping (distortion) problems occur after existing cartilage transplantation
- If reoperation is required after removal of the implant due to infection or build-up
Effect
Effects after autologous/donor rib surgery
- It can reconstruct the collapsed tip and pillar of the nose.
- It sufficiently supplements the deficient cartilage to create an ideal nose line.
- It is possible to maintain a stable nose tip without sagging in the long term.
- Not only the exterior appearance but also the internal structure is rebuilt to improve functional issues.
- It can minimize the side effects of existing surgeries (warping, contracture, etc.).
- Custom designs that harmonize with your face are available.

Postoperative Care
- In the case of rhinoplasty, smoking and drinking must be avoided for at least one month. Excessive exercise and sauna use should also be avoided.
- To minimize swelling and bruising, we recommend using cold compresses for three days. Apply for 3 to 15 minutes, then rest for five minutes.
- You must sleep in an upright position for 7 days.
- Bruising, swelling, and pain may occur for a few days after surgery. These will disappear after about a week, depending on individual differences.
- Do not remove any bandages, plasters, or cotton after surgery.
- Accessories such as glasses and sunglasses may be worn after 4 weeks.
- You may experience symptoms such as tingling, pulling, tingling, and numbness for about a month, but this is normal.
- If you suddenly experience pain, swelling, or redness, please visit a hospital.
- Avoid contact with water around the stitches until the stitches are removed.
